Jeff Bomer Legacy of Giving Circle
The legend of Edwin “Jeff” Bomer took root back in 1974 at his very first YMCA of Austin board meeting, when the main topic on the agenda was to discuss the possibility of shutting the Y down because the organization could not meet payroll. Thanks to the persistence and dedication of volunteers like Bomer and Dr. Martin Legett, who wrote personal checks to help the Y survive the lean times, the organization ultimately charted a course toward stability and growth. Today, with the Austin Y surpassing $30 million in annual revenue and providing financial assistance to more than 37,000 deserving neighbors, those dark days have become a distant memory.
Over the years, Bomer developed a reputation as the E.F. Hutton of the Metropolitan Board of Directors (“When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen.”). His wise and measured counsel on a wide range of matters from financial management to real estate set the tone of fiscal responsibility. His humble, reserved personality spoke of steadfast dependability. Never one to seek the spotlight, he quietly became one of the Y’s largest donors over the course of his 40+ year tenure.
The imprint of Jeff Bomer on the Austin Y is an indelible one – from the TownLake Y Natatorium to the Southwest and East Communities YMCAs and beyond. But the true measure of his legacy lay not in buildings, but in the thousands of kids and families who came through the doors every year and whose lives were forever shaped by his careful hand.
Jeff Bomer believed deeply in the YMCA and its potential to strengthen our community. That’s why the YMCA of Austin has created the Jeff Bomer Legacy of Giving Circle to honor those fellow supporters who shared Jeff’s passion and commitment for the Y. Inductees into the Legacy of Giving Circle have contributed $100,000 or more over their lifetime to advance the Y Mission. Through their collective philanthropy, they have ensured the Y’s ability to meet the challenges facing our community – yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
